Preserving High Quality Embryos for Future Use
Cryopreserving
|
Pacific Northwest Fertility freezes all high quality embryos for future
use. When eggs are fertilized, many embryos are usually created. After the
decision has been made on the appropriate number of embryos to transfer to
the uterus, patients have the option of cryopreserving any extra embryos
that are selected by the embryology lab as high quality. Arresting embryos
or poorly developing embryos are not frozen. Due to the selection criteria
of what is frozen, typically, 80-90% of the embryos will survive the
freeze-thaw process and each embryo has a 20-30% chance of implanting and
becoming a baby. The time an embryo can remain frozen undamaged appears to
be indefinite. Frozen embryos can be discarded, transferred back to the
patient, or shipped to another facility.
