Fertilized Oocyte

 

Image through a microscope of a normally fertilized embryo……the day after retrieval of the oocyte and insemination with sperm, the embryo consists of two pronuclei, one from the male spermatozoa and a second from the female oocyte.

 

 

 

Day 3 embryo

 

Image through the microscope of a Day 3 embryo…..Normally dividing embryos contain from 4-8 blastomeres or cells on the third day of cleavage.

 

 

 

Day 5 Blastocyst

 

Image through a microscope of a Day 5 Blastocyst…..the blastocyst contains greater than 100 cells that are formed into 2 distinct types, the inner cell mass that goes on to make the fetus and the surface cells called the trophectoderm that goes on to make the placenta.
